WikiLeaks founder Assange has encrypted Guantanamo documents, will release them if arrested

WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange has circulated across the internet an encrypted “poison pill” cache of uncensored documents suspected to include files on BP and Guantanamo Bay.

One of the files identified this weekend by The (London) Sunday Times — called the “insurance” file -- has been downloaded from the WikiLeaks website by tens of thousands of supporters, from America to Australia.

Assange warns that any government that tries to curtail his activities risks triggering a new deluge of state and commercial secrets.

The military papers on Guantanamo Bay, yet to be published, believed to have been supplied by Bradley Manning, who was arrested in May. Other documents that Assange is confirmed to possess include an aerial video of a US airstrike in Afghanistan that killed civilians, BP files and Bank of America documents.

One of the key files available for download -- named insurance.aes256 -- appears to be encrypted with a 256-digit key. Experts said last week it was virtually unbreakable.

Assange has warned he can divulge the classified documents in the insurance file and similar backups if he is detained or the WikiLeaks website is permanently removed from the internet. He has suggested the contents are unredacted, posing a possible security risk for coalition partners around the world.

Assange warned: “We have over a long period of time distributed encrypted backups of material we have yet to release. All we have to do is release the password to that material, and it is instantly available.”

The “doomsday files” are part of a contingency plan drawn up by Assange and his supporters as they face a legal threat. He is wanted in Sweden over sexual assault allegations, and the US is reviewing the possibility of legal action after the release of 250,000 diplomatic cables.

Ben Laurie, a London-based computer security expert who has advised WikiLeaks, said: “Julian’s a smart guy and this is an interesting tactic. He will hope it deters anyone from acting against him.”

Nigel Smart, professor of cryptology at Bristol University, said even powerful military computers would be unable to crack the encryption. He said: “This isn’t something that can be broken with a modern computer. You need the key to open it.”

The file is 1.4 gigabytes in size, which would be big enough for a compressed version of all the files released this year and additional data.

As Fire Spreads, Israel’s Muslim Neighbors Provide Aid

Israel's Muslim neighbors provide aid

Turkey wins thanks from Netanyahu for its assistance, creating opportunity to mend fences
A fire consuming Israel’s Mount Carmel forest – the biggest in the country’s history – is providing a rare moment of cooperation between Israel and its neighbors and may even offer the chance for easing strained ties with Turkey.
Forty-one people have perished in the fire, which began last Thursday and has consumed some 10,000 acres of trees and forced more than 17,000 people to evacuate their homes.
Greece, which was devastated by forest fires last year, sent four aircraft and a Hercules plans and Cyprus two aircraft, Israel’s Foreign Ministry reported. All told, 24 of 35 aircraft used to douse the fire came from abroad.
The scale of the catastrophe caught Israel unprepared, but an appeal by Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu for international assistance was answered not just by Israel’s friends but by Turkey and some Arab governments. The prime minster on Sunday ordered a halt to new foreign fire-fighting aircraft, signaling that firefighters were close to gaining control.
Nevertheless, Turkey’s move may give the two countries a chance to mend frayed diplomatic relations

State Department To Columbia University Students: DO NOT Discuss WikiLeaks On Facebook, Twitter

State Department To Columbia University Students: DO NOT Discuss WikiLeaks On Facebook, Twitter

Talking about WikiLeaks on Facebook or Twitter could endanger your job prospects, a State Department official warned students at Columbia University's School of International and Public Affairs this week.
An email from SIPA's Office of Career Services went out Tuesday afternoon with a caution from the official, an alumnus of the school. Students who will be applying for jobs in the federal government could jeopardize their prospects by posting links to WikiLeaks online, or even by discussing the leaked documents on social networking sites, the official was quoted as saying.
"[The alumnus] recommends that you DO NOT post links to these documents nor make comments on social media sites such as Facebook or through Twitter," the Office of Career Services advised students. "Engaging in these activities would call into question your ability to deal with confidential information, which is part of most positions with the federal government."
While the massive disclosure of once-classified documents detailing some of the nation's most tightly-guarded secrets has inflamed allies and enemies alike, the move by the State Department represents a new front in the administration's campaign against unauthorized leaks.
Philip J. Crowley, spokesman for the State Department, denied in an email message any federal involvement:

Biotech firm in bid to sell genetically modified fruit for lunchboxes

A Canadian biotechnology company has asked the U.S. authorities to approve a genetically modified apple that will not brown soon after it is sliced.

The apple variety, which is being marketed as ‘Arctic’, has had the genes responsible for producing the enzyme that induces browning switched off.

Okanagan Specialty Fruits say the new type could boost sales of apples for snacks and salads and lower costs.

Neal Carter, president of the company said: ‘They look like apple trees and grow like apple trees and produce apples that look like all other apples and when you cut them, they don't turn brown."

Report calls for radical redesign of cities to cope with population growth

Report calls for radical redesign of cities to cope with population growth

"Moving away from car ownership, using real-time traffic information to help plan journeys and having more virtual meetings will be vital to prevent the megacities of the future from becoming dysfunctional and unpleasant places to live, according to a study by the environmental think tank Forum for the Future.

The report argues that authorities must begin to plan now in order to create easier and more sustainable ways of accessing goods and services in the world's ever-growing cities. Citizens must also be encouraged to change their behaviour to keep cities liveable.

By 2040, the world's urban population is expected to have grown from 3.5bn to 5.6bn. The new report calls for a radical re-engineering of cities' infrastructure to cope. 'The future is going to look pretty urban ... with more and more people shifting to cities to the point that, by 2040, we're going to have two thirds of all the people in the world living in cities,' said Ivana Gazibara, senior strategic adviser at Forum for the Future and an author of the report, Megacities on the Move."

The Defense Department forced all "war on terror" detainees at the Guantanamo Bay prison to take a high dosage of a controversial antimalarial drug, mefloquine, an act that an Army public health physician called "pharmacologic waterboarding."

The US military administered the drug despite Pentagon knowledge that mefloquine caused severe neuropsychiatric side effects, including suicidal thoughts, hallucinations and anxiety. The drug was used on the prisoners whether they had malaria or not.
The revelation, which has not been previously reported, was buried in documents publicly released by the Defense Department (DoD) two years ago as part of the government's investigation into the June 2006 deaths of three Guantanamo detainees.
Army Staff Sgt. Joe Hickman, who was stationed at Guantanamo at the time of the suicides in 2006, and has presented evidence that demonstrates the three detainees could not have died by hanging themselves, noticed in the detainees' medical files that they were given mefloquine. Hickman has been investigating the circumstances behind the detainees' deaths for nearly four years.
Interviews with mefloquine and malaria experts and a review of peer-review journals and government documents show there were no preexisting cases where mefloquine was ever prescribed for mass presumptive treatment of malaria.
All detainees arriving at Guantanamo in January 2002 were first given a treatment dosage of 1,250 mg of mefloquine, before laboratory tests were conducted to determine if they actually had the disease, according to a section of the DoD documents entitled "Standard Inprocessing Orders For Detainees." The 1,250 mg dosage is what would be given if the detainees actually had malaria. That dosage is five times higher than the prophylactic dose given to individauls to prevent the disease.

Police Arrested Twelve Year Old Boy for Refusing Vaccine at School

Police Arrested Twelve Year Old Boy for Refusing Vaccine at School:

"A child of twelve was charged with ‘threatening behaviour’ at his school in Bowmanville, East of Toronto last week. The arrest happened when the boy (who cannot be named for legal reasons) threw a tantrum refusing the Hepatitis B vaccine. The National Post reported (http://news.nationalpost.com/2010…) that police were brought into Ross Tilley Public School because the boy had threatened to damage the school. Unfortunately, the report failed to give the reason why the child was refusing the vaccine or what made him so angry.

The National Post said:
“Officers consulted with the Crown attorney’s office and charged the boy with threatening, a criminal charge police said was justified: “due to the age of the child and concerns over public safety.”"

Iran will 'never use' force against Muslim neighbours

MANAMA — Iran sought on Saturday to calm its neighbours' fears, saying it would never use force against them because they are Muslims, after Washington highlighted concerns over Tehran's suspected nuclear weapons programme.
Foreign Minister Manouchehr Mottaki made the point at a security conference two days before Iran is to sit down with world powers in Geneva for the first time since October 2009 to discuss their differences.
"We have never used our force against our neighbours and never will because our neighbours are Muslims," Mottaki told journalists on the sidelines of the Manama Dialogue, sponsored by the International Institute for Security Studies.
"Your power in the region is our power and our power is your power."

Iran says it has made its own atomic raw material - Telegraph:
"Iran says it has made its own atomic raw material
Iran said for the first time on Sunday that had domestically produced a batch of uranium yellowcake – the raw material for atomic weapons – as it sought to bolster its position before Monday's international talks on its nuclear programme.
