Nearly one-in-seven homes sold in the Lehigh Valley region in the third quarter were in some stage of foreclosure, and the distressed properties are selling for steeper discounts than traditional home sales, according to a new report released Thursday.
The number of distressed sales in the three month period ending Sept. 30 dropped 17.2 percent from the previous quarter, according to RealtyTrac, which monitors foreclosure activity nationally. Despite the drop in volume, distressed sales made up a larger percentage of overall sales in the third quarter because the housing market slowed significantly after federal tax credits that encouraged home-buying expired earlier this year.

MADISON COUNTY, Ind. (WISH) - 72-year-old Dick Thompson isn't sure if he wants to fight or give up.
"I want to get the hell out of here right now — too much hate," Thompson says one minute.
"I think it's a bunch of bull," he says another, vowing to stay.
Thompson faces eviction from his 38 acres in Madison County. The county lawyer tells 24-Hour News 8 it's because Thompson is breaking too many rules, laws and ordinances; Thompson has no water, no sewer and no electricity in his recreational trailer that he calls home.
"I'm a country boy," explains Thompson. "I just want to be left alone."
Thompson is mighty fine, thank you very much — along with his dog, Ace, his horse, Fritz, his bird, Sunshine, and many more.
The eviction papers state go-time is “Nov. 30 at noon,”' though no one came — not yet.

Stumble This!The company that Dick Cheney ran prior to becoming Vice President of the United States was atop the tongue of liberals each time his company was awarded a contract in Iraq.
Now the company's name, Halliburton, is being spoken somewhere else: Nigeria.
According to a story filed late Wednesday, Cheney will be indicted in a Nigerian bribery case as part of an investigation into an alleged $180 million bribery scandal.
"Last week, Nigeria arrested at least 23 officials from companies including Halliburton, Saipem, Technip and a former subsidiary of Panalpina Welttransport Holding AG in connection with alleged illegal payments to Nigerian officials. Those detained were all freed on bail on Nov. 29," Bloomberg News' Elisha Bala-Gbogbo wrote.
"Authorities in the West African nation are probing Halliburton, Saipem and Technip for the alleged payment of $180 million in bribes to win a $6 billion liquefied natural-gas contract," Bala-Gbogbo added. "Panalpina is being investigated for illegal payments it allegedly made to Nigerian customs officials on behalf of Royal Dutch Shell Plc."

The prosecuting counsel for the country's Economic and Financial Crimes Commission said that indictments will be handed down in the next three days and that an arrest warrant for Cheney "will be issued and transmitted through Interpol."
Adds Bloomberg, "Obla said charges will be filed against current and former chief executive officers of Halliburton, including Cheney, who was CEO from 1995 to 2000, and its former unit KBR Inc., based in Houston, Texas; Technip SA, Europe’s second-largest oilfield- services provider; Eni SpA, Italy’s biggest oil company; and Saipem Construction Co., a unit of Eni. Obla didn’t identify the former officials whom he said held office when the alleged bribes were paid."
A spokesman for Cheney declined to comment.
The US Securities and Exchange Committee probe focused on the deal as early as 2004.Wrote The Washington Post at the time:
The Nigerian project, started in the early 1990s, was worth almost $5 billion to TSKJ, a partnership that included a KBR predecessor, as well as companies from France, Japan and the Netherlands.At issue are payments made to Tristar, a Gibraltar company that had a consulting arrangement with a corporation formed by TSKJ to "administer the contracts and execute the work" in Nigeria, a Halliburton spokeswoman said in response to questions.KBR, the engineering and construction subsidiary of Halliburton, was formed when Halliburton acquired Dresser Industries Inc. in 1998. It was a combination of Halliburton's Brown & Root and Dresser's M.W. Kellogg Co. Officials from the SEC and Cheney's office declined to comment.
Early on Thursday, Halliburton said they hadn't seen the new charges, but still denied their involvement.
"Halliburton's oil-field services operations in Nigeria have never in any way been part of the LNG project and none of the Halliburton employees have ever had any connection to or participation in that project," Tara Mullee Agard, a spokeswoman for the Houston-based company, said in an e-mailed response to Bloomberg.
Added Bloomberg: "Halliburton Co., the world's second- largest oilfield-services provider, said it hasn't seen any amended charges by Nigerian authorities who plan to indict current and former employees in a bribery scandal."

Huge budget shortfalls are prompting a handful of states to begin discussing a once-unthinkable scenario: dropping out of the Medicaid insurance program for the poor.

Australian Prime Minister Julia Gillard lambasted the leaking of classified US documents as “grossly irresponsible” and “illegal” Thursday as the government braced itself for the publication of 1,500 diplomatic cables relating to Australia.

Ms. Gillard told 4BC Radio that Australian security officials were combing through the documents – released via the whistleblowing site WikiLeaks – to assess the implications. “I absolutely condemn the placement of this information on the WikiLeakswebsite,” she said. “It’s a grossly irresponsible thing to do, and an illegal thing to do.”
The fall-out from “Cablegate” is being watched with particular interest in Australia, birthplace of the website’s founder, Julian Assange, although the country itself – a close ally of the United States – has not yet figured prominently in the documents.
According to the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC), US Ambassador to Australia Jeffrey Bleich has briefed Australian Defense Minister Stephen Smith on 1,500 cables that mention Australia. While their contents have yet to be divulged, one political commentator, David Penberthy, says they would be of considerable interest if they related to Australia’s military role in Iraq or Afghanistan.
The leaks story has received extensive coverage in Australia, with Mr. Assange’s nationality – he was born in Queensland and studied at the University of Melbourne – giving it extra punch. His mother, Christine, who recently moved back to Queensland to escape media scrutiny, gave two interviews this week before going to ground.
She said she was distressed by an International police agency (Interpol) notice issued for Mr. Assange’s arrest, on charges of raping two women in Sweden, and told Queensland’s Courier-Mail newspaper: “He sees what he’s doing as doing a good thing in the world – fighting baddies, if you like.”
Not all his compatriots agree. “The jury is out on whether WikiLeaks’ Julian Assange is a whistleblowing hero or dangerous anarchist,” the Sydney-based Daily Telegraph wrote. “Is he an information warrior using the internet’s reach and anonymity to expose high-level global corruption … or is he an anarchist exploiting the noble cause of whistleblowing for the sake of self-promotion?”
To the disappointment of some Australians, the sole mention of the country to date in the leaked documents describes it as a “rock solid,” [as an ally] but not influential in the diplomatic arena.
David Burchell, an expert in Australian politics based at the University of Western Sydney, doubts the other cables will be any more explosive – or damaging to national security. “I don’t think there’s any particular reason for Australians to be quaking in our boots,” he says.
Mr. Penberthy, editor of a news commentary website, The Punch, says: “They could relate to our commitment to the war in Iraq or Afghanistan, or to our relationship with neighbors such as Indonesia. But we’re not a global heavyweight and I can’t imagine there would be anything earth-shattering in them.”
He believes Australians are as mystified as everyone else about Assange’s motives. “I think they are just puzzled and bemused by this weird, blonde-haired bloke from Australia who has ended up terrorizing the entire Western world.”
