UK students protest ahead of controversial vote

Police officers clash with student demonstrators marching towards Parliament on December 9, 2010 in London.

London, England (CNN) -- Thousands of angry students took to the streets of London Thursday for another protest, as British lawmakers prepared to vote on controversial plans to raise tuition fees.

10,000 students from around the UK were expected to converge on the capital to hear speeches from student representatives and representatives of all major trade unions, according to the National Union of Students (NUS).

But thousands more were expected to march on Westminster in central London, where the country's parliament building is located.

Hundreds of police officers have been deployed, many with riot gear, as the authorities look to avoid a repeat of the disturbances last month when hundreds of protesters stormed the Conservative Party headquarters in the city. The Conservatives are the senior partner in a ruling coalition with the Liberal Democrats.

However, organizers called for Thursday's protests to remain peaceful. By lunchtime hundreds of students were filtering into central London, marshaled by long lines of police in fluorescent jackets. Minor scuffles were reported as some protesters attempted to squeeze through the lines.
