NEW YORK, N.Y. - Israel's president warned Thursday that a U.N. vote for an independent Palestinian state won't bring peace because the United Nations can't guarantee Israel's security.
Shimon Peres said Israel believes in a two-state solution but that it must be negotiated between Israel and the Palestinians, not imposed by the international community.
Peres told diplomats from 25 countries — including the 15 Security Council members — at a breakfast at the International Peace Institute that they "represent a responsibility, not just an exercise in futility," and should help ensure that Israeli-Palestinian negotiations get back on track and result in a peace agreement that ends their long conflict.
