Thousands protest in Yemen to demand president's ouster; police attack them with tear gas

SANAA, Yemen - Witnesses say thousands of people in southern Yemen took to the streets to demand that their president step down, and that police attacked the demonstrators with tear gas, batons and bullets.

Medical officials said at least 200 of the protesters in Taiz were treated Sunday for fainting or breathing problems caused by tear gas. They say three protesters suffered minor injuries. The officials spoke on condition of anonymity out of fear of government reprisals.

Witnesses say a large group of women began the demonstration in the main street and that thousands of men joined them after seeing police attack the crowd.

Activist Ghazi al-Samei says the protesters were shouting "our demonstration is peaceful" and calling on President Ali Abdullah Saleh to go.
